“Shahin”
The leadership of the Prophet ﷺ was built upon honesty, trust, patience, and justice. He was not only a political authority but also a courageous, wise, and strategic military leader. Even during warfare, he strictly adhered to the limits defined by Islam. Beyond these roles, he acted as a moral guide for humanity, offering a clear direction in life through his conduct and bringing renewed spirit and structure to social behavior.
In the military domain, the Prophetic method established a clear ethical code for warfare. This framework ensured the protection of civilians, women, and children, prohibited the destruction of places of worship, and safeguarded natural resources such as trees and crops. It also emphasized kindness and humane treatment toward prisoners of war.
A notable example of his conduct with captives occurred during the Battle of Badr. After the Muslims achieved victory and captured several Quraysh fighters, the Prophet ﷺ did not impose harsh punishment. Instead, he instructed his companions to treat the prisoners with compassion and dignity. Historical reports highlight that Muslims would offer better food to the captives while they themselves ate simpler meals, reflecting remarkable moral character. Additionally, prisoners were given the chance to secure their freedom by teaching reading and writing to the children of Madinah.
The Prophet’s political outlook extended beyond internal governance to the international sphere. He sent letters to global leaders, inviting them to peace and truth. Among these efforts was a letter addressed to Heraclius, the ruler of Rome, aimed at fostering mutual understanding and relations.
Commitment to agreements was a fundamental principle in his policy. Every treaty was honored, with the Treaty of Hudaybiah standing as a clear example of this dedication.
One defining feature of the Prophet’s leadership was his determination not to allow military or political situations to end in favor of his opponents. For example, after the Muslims faced difficulty in the Battle of Uhud, he took swift action the next day by sending forces to Hamra al-Asad. This move instilled fear among Quraysh, compelling them to retreat to Makkah, while the Prophet returned to Madinah, preserving the dignity and strength of the Muslims.
Following the Battle of Mu’tah, the Prophet organized a force of three hundred soldiers under the command of Amr ibn al-Aas. This force was sent to confront Arab tribes allied with the Romans. Amr ibn al-Aas reached al-Salasil, near the region of Sham, where the Quda’ah tribe resided.
After evaluating the situation, Amr realized that immediate confrontation would not be favorable. He wrote to the Prophet ﷺ requesting reinforcement. In response, two hundred additional fighters were sent under the leadership of Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, including Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). They joined Amr’s army and operated under his command. Notably, Amr ibn al-As had accepted Islam only a few months earlier, yet he was entrusted with leading such distinguished companions.
This confrontation became known as the Battle of Dhat al-Salasil. The Muslims succeeded in intimidating the Roman-supported tribes and returned safely to Madinah. The outcome spread widely, reinforcing the message that the Prophet ﷺ would firmly respond to any support given to his enemies.
The term “al-Salasil” means “chains,” a name given because the opposing forces had bound themselves together with chains to prevent retreat. A fierce battle followed, ending in Muslims’ victory. This success eliminated potential threats and played a key role in strengthening the defensive position of the early Islamic state.
Islam, as a complete system encompassing ethics, laws, and guidance, pays close attention to all aspects of human life, ensuring that individuals in society feel secure and protected.
In conclusion, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was not only a strong figure in warfare but also a visionary leader whose intellectual depth, strategic planning, political wisdom, moral integrity, and respect for agreements continue to guide humanity toward success and well-being.
