Good News for Kabul Residents: Construction of an Interchange Flyover at Nejat Monument to Begin Soon

As part of its ongoing infrastructure programs and efforts to ease traffic congestion, Kabul Municipality has completed the planning and design for the construction of a vehicle flyover based on an interchange (circular ramp) system at the Nejat Monument intersection.
According to Engineer Fayeq Ahmad Tasal, Head of Urban Infrastructure at Kabul Municipality, the flyover will be constructed on the main Kabul–Logar road and has been designed in response to population growth, the rising number of vehicles, and the need for a modern and standard transportation system. He described the project as one of the municipality’s major and strategic initiatives.
The Nejat Monument intersection is considered one of the most congested points in Kabul, as it serves as a key junction for two major transit corridors: Kabul–Logar and Kabul–Jalalabad.
On a daily basis, residents and travelers experience heavy traffic congestion in this area, resulting in wasted time, increased fuel consumption, higher transit costs, environmental pollution, and disruption of traffic flow.
Engineer Tasal noted that Kabul Municipality had previously gathered traffic data from this intersection and, following detailed technical and traffic analyses, determined that the existing capacity of the Nejat Monument intersection is very limited and unable to effectively manage current traffic volumes or anticipated increases in the future.
Based on these evaluations, the flyover has been designed with three lanes in each direction, including three outgoing and three incoming lanes. The structure will have a total length of 450 meters and a width of 28 meters.
The height of the flyover has been set at about seven meters to ensure safe vehicle movement and improved traffic organization at ground level.
The project also includes two circular ramps, or loops, one measuring about 252 meters and the other 239 meters in length, with radius of 48 and 50 meters respectively.
The construction of the flyover at the Nejat Monument intersection is regarded by Kabul Municipality as an important step toward strengthening the city’s transit network, reducing traffic congestion, and improving urban order.
Once implemented, the project is expected to significantly facilitate travel for residents, reduce environmental pollution, and contribute to the sustainable development of Kabul city.
